While Promise of Darkness by Bec McMaster holds on to its individuality from her steampunk series, it does hold the same dark undertone that I remember from my time in her writing previously. The villains aren’t clearly stated so as the reader you find yourself learning things and investigating along with the characters. The world building of this first installment wasn’t the best I’ve encountered, but it worked well with the characters and the conflicts interwoven throughout the story. I wish I had had the time to marinate of this story but time just wasn’t on my side. I’m so intrigued by the curse that is talked about early on, as well as a deeper explanation of the origin story of this world McMaster crafted for Promise of Darkness and its subsequent novels. Another aspect of this story that I enjoyed were the solidity of the characters. Usually when you’re […]

Ridden Hard by Kendra Queen

Ridden Hard by Kendra Queen

In all my years of reading I can honestly say that I’ve never read a story like Ridden Hard by Kendra Queen. I usually shy away from historical stories that are set in the west or are surrounded by segregation, slavery, or white/black interactions because some authors and writers have a tendency to sugarcoat things that shouldn’t be fictionalized. So, what made Ridden Hard a story that I felt I needed to try? I would have to say it was the reviews I read pertaining to this novel and the fact that the author was a black woman. I’ve always been a big believer in that there’s no one better to write diverse stories than diverse individuals, so to have the chance to read a diverse story placed in a controversial period intrigued me. But it all came down to me wanting to see who this new-to-me author would add […]

Bonds of Justice by Nalini Singh

Bonds of Justice by Nalini Singh

I was so close on giving up on Bonds of Justice by Nalini Singh, so close. The beginning, I felt, started off so incredibly slow, but it wasn’t until I closed the pages to Bonds of Justice that I realized I had become spoiled with the upbeat beginnings that encompassed Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series. For me the changelings always brought the excitement, but the story of Bonds of Justice didn’t focus on the Changelings for once, but on the human and Psy. Echo of Silence (short story within Wild Embrace) touched on this complicated relationship type, but it of course didn’t go into as much depth as Bonds of Justice did since it was a novella. But before Bonds of Justice we were introduced to the E-Psy, F-Psy, M-Psy, and Tk-Psy but throughout those stories the J-Psy were mentioned as either a cautionary tale or in comparison to who has it worse amongst the Psy. So […]

Book Review | Demon’s Savior and Demon’s War by Courtney Dean

Book Review | Demon’s Savior and Demon’s War by Courtney Dean

I went back and forth on whether I wanted to do one book review on both Demon’s Savior and Demon’s War by Courtney Dean. The decision was made easy when I began to think of how I experienced both stories. I first borrowed Demon’s War from the kindle unlimited library and then when I realized that it was the second story in a series. I’m not saying that you need to read Demon’s Savior to read Demon’s War but it will definitely help clear up any moments of confusion you may have. So to the actual review of these two stories … The first chapter I read in Demon’s War I could deduce that there was a traitor situation amongst the MC, but the villain was hiding in amongst the brothers. I wasn’t until the beginning of the second chapter that I felt that I had missed some vital information […]

Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh

Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh

I was hoping for Kaleb’s story but the actual details of what his story could’ve entailed never would formulate in my mind. Thank goodness I’m not a writer because I have a feeling that if I would’ve wrote Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh it would’ve went something like this: “Kaleb was a bad mama jamma and since no one wanted to fight him because he was too powerful it took a special someone who had already captured his heart to come and regulate his badassness so that he could be welcomed back into society and not try to kill everyone. The End.” But in all seriousness, I never would’ve imagined Heart of Obsidian turning out the way it did on top of what it added to the overall Psy-Changeling series. With all of that said I can’t say that I was completely blown away or pleased with the execution of Kaleb’s story. Knowing from […]
